Passionate about sailing and little else, widower Jean-Paul is going through a rough patch. Up to his ears in debt, and struggling with a drinking problem, he pulls away from his family and signs up for the Virtual Regatta, the online version of the Vendée Globe boat race.
To enhance the impression of being a “real” skipper, Jean-Paul holes up for 3 months on his boat… in his garden. His imaginary, yet very real voyage will allow him to reconnect with his family and with himself. Director Xavier Beauvois (Of Gods and Men, Don’t Forget You’re Going to Die) brings simplicity and poignancy to this story of a man trying to take his life back into his own hands.
Passionné de voile et de presque rien d'autre, Jean-Paul, veuf, traverse une période difficile. Endetté jusqu'au cou et aux prises avec un problème d'alcool, il s'éloigne de sa famille et s'inscrit à la Régate Virtuelle, la version en ligne du Vendée Globe.
Pour se sentir plus à l'aise dans la peau d'un « vrai » capitaine, Jean-Paul s'isole pendant trois mois sur son bateau… dans son jardin. Ce voyage imaginaire, et pourtant bien réel, lui permettra de renouer avec sa famille et avec lui-même. Le réalisateur Xavier Beauvois (Des hommes et des dieux, N'oublie pas que tu vas mourir) apporte simplicité et émotion à ce récit d'un homme qui tente de reprendre sa vie en main.
