Agathe Robinson (Camille Rutherford) is a Parisienne writer — hopelessly clumsy, unabashedly charming, and full of contradictions who finds herself in a desperate state of singledom. Her dream is to experience love like in a Jane Austen novel and channel that understanding into her work on the page. Instead, she spends her days selling books in the legendary English-language bookshop, Shakespeare & Co., on the Left Bank.
As she's invited to the Jane Austen Writers' Residency in England she crosses the line with her best friend, Felix (Pablo Pauly), sharing a kiss. Then, once she's across the channel, a potential Mr Darcy presents himself in the form of Jane Austen's curmudgeonly descendant, Oliver (Charlie Anson).
Agathe must challenge her insecurities, confront trauma in her past, while also navigating this unexpected love triangle.
If there's any justice in the world Jane Austen Wrecked My Life will make Camille Rutherford a star: She's awkward, hilarious, and entirely magnetic in every scene. The film somehow balances the very English concerns of an Austen-inspired tale with a French comedy of manners, conveyed by a cast of effortlessly bilingual performers. This is a gorgeously autumnal and literate romantic comedy.
This is Carbon Arc Cinema's second ICYMI screening, bringing back quality art house films that briefly ran at the multiplex. .
Agathe Robinson (Camille Rutherford) est une écrivaine parisienne désespérément maladroite, au charme effronté et pleine de contradictions, qui se retrouve dans une une empasse sentimentale. Son rêve est de vivre un amour digne d'un roman de Jane Austen et d'en transposer l'esprit dans son travail d'écriture. Au lieu de cela, elle passe ses journées à vendre des livres dans la légendaire librairie anglophone Shakespeare & Co., sur la rive gauche.
Invitée à la résidence d'auteurs "Jane Austen" en Angleterre, elle dépasse une limite en embrassant son meilleur ami Félix (Pablo Pauly). Une fois de l'autre côté de la Manche, un prétendu M. Darcy fait son apparition sous les traits du descendant grincheux de Jane Austen, Oliver (Charlie Anson).
Agathe doit alors surmonter ses insécurités, affronter les traumatismes de son passé, tout en naviguant dans ce triangle amoureux inattendu.
S'il y a une justice dans le monde, Jane Austen a gâché ma vie fera de Camille Rutherford une star : elle est maladroite, hilarante et résolument magnétique. Le film parvient à trouver un équilibre entre les préoccupations très anglaises d'un récit inspiré d'Austen et une comédie de mœurs à la française, portée par une distribution bilingues. Une comédie romantique magnifiquement automnale et littéraire.
Il s'agit de la deuxième projection "ICYMI" de Carbon Arc Cinema, qui remet à l'affiche des films d'art et d'essai de qualité brièvement diffusés dans les salles multiplexes.
