Kelly Reichardt | USA | 2008 | 80m
Each month this year Carbon Arc presents a director for a mini-restrospective of their work. This month the Carbon Arc programmers have selected American indie icon Kelly Reichardt!
A touching political road movie about an idealistic young drifter, her faithful dog and the wide open spaces of the Pacific Northwest.
Wendy (Williams) is a down-on-her-luck girl who's hoping to turn things around for herself with a summer job in Alaska. On route to her new life, Wendy's car breaks down in Oregon and the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart. Gorgeously filmed in stark, luminous imagery, Wendy and Lucy addresses issues of sympathy and generosity at the edges of American life, revealing the limits and depths of people's duty to each other in our modern times.
Starring Michelle Williams, whose beautifully crafted, critically-acclaimed performance garnered a 2009 Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead, Reichardt's drama is one of 2008’s most celebrated films, listed on over 70 top 10 critic’s lists including Entertainment Weekly, New York Times, AFI (American Film Institute), Newsweek, Film Comment, The Onion and the National Board of Review.
Tickets $12 ($11.40 cash at the door if available)
