Screening times:

Eiichi Yamamoto | Japan | 1973 | 86m
Japanese with English subtitles

This screening is a co-presentation of Lucid Toons and Deep Cuts. Lucid Toons is a monthly series spinoff at Carbon Arc, originating from the annual Animation Festival of Halifax! Deep Cuts is a celebration of the obscure, under appreciated, and underseen. Things we love: late 70s, early 90s, mid 2000s, camp, arthouse, vampires, women's right & wrongs, coming of age, non-horror horror movies, 15-20% on rotten tomatoes, not taking serious films seriously. @watchdeepcuts

A peasant woman is banished from her village and makes a deal with the devil to gain magical powers. Filled with brilliant visual artistry in the form of a unique artistic style that combines watercolor aesthetics with a nightmare-like quality.

An evil feudal lord sexually assaults a young village girl on her wedding night. After fleeing the village, Jeanne makes a pact with the devil to obtain magical powers and thus carry out her revenge.... A loose reimagining of the story of Joan of Arc, with elements from the book "La Sorcière" by Jules Michelet. It is part of the "Animerama" trilogy, consisting of "One Thousand and One Nights" (1969), "Cleopatra" (1970), and "Belladonna of Sadness" (1973). Conceived by Osamu Tezuka, the father of manga/anime, the trilogy was characterized by two elements: it was designed to be projected in movie theaters — something uncommon at the time — and it was adult animation, predating works like Ralph Bakshi's "Fritz the Cat."

Tickets $12.65 ($12 cash at the door if available)
