Screening times:
Sunday, July 13, 6:30 PM

Nick DiLiberto | Japan | 2020 | 68m

Empress of Darkness will be preceded by an animated work inspired by a tale from the Halifax Explosion of 1917: the multi-award-winning Canadian short The Flying Sailor.

Carbon Arc is delighted to partner with Lucid Toons, a monthly series spinoff from the annual Animation Festival of Halifax! In June, Lucid Toons presents The Flying Sailor (8-min short) followed by feature presentation Empress of Darkness!

In a world of forever night, the only hope of opening the skies and freeing the Sun lies behind the eyes of a cursed Empress. An Empress so beautiful that Light only shines for her. Cursed to an eternal sleep, so does the Sun and until she awakens there will never be Sun light again.

Now many years after the curse was drawn the last of her kind are being sacrificed in a final attempt to force the Sun to reappear in the skies anew. But this misguided ritual has done more harm than good, for these sacrifices are slowly vanquishing all hope of ever lifting the curses spell.

If just one of the Empress’s followers could reach her Kingdom, the spell could be broken and the World could return to flourish with light once again. Unfortunately for her, Lord Graxus and his Evil Horde are ready to stop and kill all who challenge. All but one. This is the Legend of the Empress of Darkness.

All hand-drawn, directed, written, animated and produced by ONE PERSON! Over 60,000 drawings in total!

The Flying Sailor

Two ships collide in a harbour, an explosion shatters a city, and a sailor is blasted skyward. A bold blend of comedy, suspense and philosophy, The Flying Sailor is an exhilarating contemplation of the wonder and fragility of existence.
