Carbon Arc is delighted to partner with Lucid Toons, a monthly series spinoff from the annual Animation Festival of Halifax! In June, Lucid Toons presents Fabulous Fleischer Toons Restored!

A Q&A with Jane Fleischer Reid (Owner, Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored) and Ray Pointer (Author, The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer: American Animation Pioneer). will occur immediately after Greatest Hits 2, then there will be a short intermission before we screen Best of Superman at 7:45PM.

It is possible to buy tickets to either 'Greatest Hits 2' (includes Q&A) only, or 'Best of Superman' only. Or see both and get best value with a double feature ticket!

Max Fleischer is one of the most renowned pioneers in animation. From 1919 to 1942, he and his company, Fleischer Studios, produced nearly 700 cartoons. Among his many achievements, his studio was the first to animate both Popeye and Superman — and he created the legendary Betty Boop, who remains an icon of American culture to this day.

Yet despite Fleischer’s major and prolific achievements, there is no comprehensive collection of his work.

Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored was founded by Max Fleischer's granddaughter, Jane Fleischer. The mission of Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored is to collect all of the Fleischer cartoons that remain today, restore them, and gather them into a single digital space so they can be seen by audiences as Max Fleischer intended.

In the 1990s, Ray Pointer was active in the Animation Renaissance on the west coast, working for Film Roman, DIC Entertainment, Hanna-Barbera, Universal, Disney Interactive, Fred Wolf Films, MGM, and Nickelodeon, becoming an Animation Director.

Due to his years of dedicated service to the industry, Ray was inducted into The Animation Peer Group of The Television Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996.

From 2009 to 2014 Ray was an Adjunct Professor in Digital Media at Kendall College of Art and design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since his retirement, he has authored the book, The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer: American Animation Pioneer.

After a 25-year career as an attorney in Los Angeles and Sonoma County, Jane Fleischer Reid has undertaken the task of reconstructing her grandfather's cartoon library. Max Fleischer was a pioneer in the animation industry. However, there is no single location at which to find all the Fleischer films. Jane is in the process of creating a comprehensive digital library of all of Max’s work. Jane scours archives and libraries holding copies of Fleischer cartoons and reaches out to private collectors for prints they may have collected in the past.

Jane has hired Thad Komorowski of Cineaste Restoration to take on the restoration itself and oversee the work of other restorers. Since 2023, Thad and his team have restored over 115 Fleischer cartoons.

Both Jane Fleischer Reid and Ray Pointer will be available for a post-screening Q&A via video-link!
