This event takes place in the "Board Room", same level as Carbon Arc Cinema inside the Museum of Natural History!

Come play in our studio! Experience the magic and joy of making animation by hand. Newbies and pros alike can use materials like paper, cardboard, figurines, clay, and whiteboards to make scenes and stories come to life. We provide the materials; you provide the imagination – or just drop by to see what other people have been working on, displayed throughout the night.

Welcome to our drop-in handmade animation studio!

Stop-motion animation is fun to do solo or with friends. We’ll provide some basic materials like construction paper, clay/dough, markers, crayons, and some other odds and ends – and some basic instruction if you’d like it. There will be story ideas you can build on, or you can let your imagination soar. And if you want to share your work when you’re finished, we’ll screen it throughout the evening.

You don’t need to bring anything with you. If you want to download the free Stop Motion Studio app (for iOS and Android), you can use your own phone or tablet, but we’ll also have a few devices available for you to use.

If you want to continue your animation adventure beyond Nocturne, we’ll have some things for you to take home. We’ll show you how to make a stand for your phone or tablet out of recycled materials. And you can take a how-to guide so you can continue to explore this fun, flexible, and potentially free art.

If you’re not keen on animating but want to have a look, you’re very welcome! Drop by, see people at work, and enjoy the results of their creativity on screen throughout the event.
