After writing for Cahiers du Cinéma, young iconoclast Godard decides making films is the best film criticism. He gets Beauregard to fund a low-budget feature, creating a treatment with Truffaut about a gangster couple.
From Director Richard Linklater, Nouvelle Vague is the story of Jean-Luc Godard making Breathless. The film is a love letter to the revolutionary magic of the French New Wave and a homage to Godard's influential 1960 film, capturing its youthful dynamism and creative chaos.
“This is not about remaking Breathless, but looking at it from another angle,” said Linklater. "I want to dive into 1959 with my camera and recreate the era, the people, the atmosphere. I want to hang out with the New Wave crowd. I told all the actors: ‘You are NOT making a period film. You are living in the moment. Godard is a well-known critic, but he’s a first-time director. You’re having fun shooting with him, but you’re wondering if this film will ever be released.’”
“As a movie lover I was utterly enraptured by Nouvelle Vague. It makes you feel as if this is all unfolding right in front of your eyes. It has immediacy and complete credibility.” - Leonard Maltin, leonardmaltin.com
“With new attitudes, techniques, technologies, casts, crews and with one another’s support, they were borrowing from the past, engaging with the present and creating the future.”- Manohla Dargis, New York Times
“Linklater is thematically drawn to partnership and camaraderie... Here, the director wrests a radioactive joy from observing Godard generate ideas with his ensemble, even as others pull their hair out around him.” - David Sims, The Atlantic
Academy Award shortlisted for Best Cinematography.
