Director's Statement: The Mejía family crossed the border as undocumented immigrants more than forty years ago. I met them during their vacation in Oaxaca when they returned to their village with their three children, who had recently been documented as U.S. citizens in 1993. A year later, we made a 55-minute documentary for television: it was a portrait of a family; Mexican parents and children born in the United States.

We filmed in Fresno, California, and in Jaltepec, Oaxaca, a town that at the time suffered from water scarcity and extreme erosion; a place without hope, where those who could left, the very old or very young were left behind. A familiar story that is common in the towns of Mexico. The Mejía family settled in California's Central Valley, where the water shortage continued.

In Oaxacalifornia: The Return, we meet the current generation of the Mejía family. How have their lives changed?

A film about family: identity, assimilation, contradictions, aspirations, and the passage of time.
