Bi Gan | China, France | 2025 | 156m
In Mandarin with English subtitles

Humanity has lost the ability to dream. One creature remains entranced by the fading illusions of the dreamworld. This monster, adrift in reverie, clings to visions no one else can see — until a woman appears. Gifted with the rare power to perceive these illusions for what they truly are, she chooses to enter the monster’s dreams, determined to uncover the truth that lies hidden within.

Film at Lincoln Center, New York, describes this epic, sci-fi coded picture like this:

“This phantasmagoric dream machine from visionary Chinese director Bi Gan (Long Day’s Journey Into Night) is an elusive yet monumental love letter to a century of cinema, unfolding over five chapters that feature a dazzling array of styles and genres. The film sends its ever-morphing protagonist (Jackson Yee) through a series of genres, from Méliès-inflected silent fantasy to wartime thriller to con-artist buddy picture to millennial vampire romance — the latter depicted in one of Bi’s customary, and ever astonishing, single takes.

“Even within genre parameters, the director never takes the road well-travelled, offering jolts and marvels around every corner. Resurrection is one of the most audacious and ambitious gifts for cinematic thrill-seekers in many a moon.”

“Resurrection is a full-sensory experience; indeed, each chapter is framed around the theme of the six Buddhist senses: Sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and mind.” - Ty Burr, Ty Burr’s Watch List (Substack)

“Resurrection strips its audience down and builds them back up again, revealing how we change the art we make, and how it changes us in turn.” - Jacob Oller, AV Club

“Arriving at a moment when the movies have seldom felt more finite or more vulnerable... this astonishing work insists — in its title, and in the heroic force of Bi’s artistry and ambition — that every end really is a new beginning.” - Justin Chang, The New Yorker
