Directed by Jim Sharman and adapted from the stage musical by Richard O'Brien, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is less a conventional film than a participatory cultural phenomenon. What began as a modest, oddball musical comedy evolved into the longest-running theatrical release in cinema history, reshaping how audiences interact with movies.

The story itself is knowingly flimsy: a straight-laced couple, Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon), stumble into a stormy castle occupied by the flamboyant Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a self-described “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.” What follows is a collision of sci-fi parody, sexual liberation, and glam-rock excess that gleefully dismantles heteronormative expectations.

Musically, the film blends rock, glam, and pastiche. Songs like “Time Warp” and “Sweet Transvestite” function as communal rituals rather than narrative devices, encouraging repetition, call-and-response, and physical participation.
