Set in the near-future Brazil, Tereza, 77, has lived her whole life in a small industrialized town in the Amazon. One day she receives an official government order to relocate to a senior housing colony. The colony is an isolated area where the elderly, usually those over the age of 80, are brought to “enjoy” their final years, freeing the younger generation to focus fully on productivity and growth. Tereza refuses to accept this imposed fate. Instead, she embarks on a transformative journey through the rivers and tributaries of the Amazon to fulfill one last wish before her freedom is taken away, she wants to fly. This is a decision that will change her destiny forever.
This is a gorgeous film centering on a vibrant performance from screen and stage veteran Denise Weinberg, taking audiences from a dystopian urban vision to a meditative road movie where the roads are the incredible waterways of the Amazon.
“What’s remarkable about The Blue Trail and makes it such a delight is that despite all the oppression in the air, it’s a movie filled with hope and faith in human resilience at any age.” David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
“An empowering narrative of one woman who refuses to see age as a ceiling, the film serves as a potent warning for viewers about the marginalization of the elderly.” - Marshall Shaffer, Slant Magazine
“The gentle sci-fi drama presents a vivid and detailed world whose murkiest elements are often left to innuendos and the imagination (but feel no less threatening). The result is a uniquely life-affirming coming of (old) age saga.” - Siddhant Adlakha, Observer
