Brought up in an environment full of violence and alcohol, throwing herself into competitive swimming to numb her reality, Lidia Yuknavitch seemed destined for self-destruction and failure until words offered her unexpected freedom in the form of literature. The Chronology of Water, adapted from Yuknavitch’s autobiographical bestseller, follows Lidia’s (Imogen Poots) journey in an exploration of how trauma can be transformed into art through re-possessing our own bloody histories, particularly those uniquely experienced by the bodies of women and girls.

Writing about her debut feature, director Kristen Stewart says: “At its core, The Chronology of Water is an invitation: to witness ugliness, to sit with shame, and emerge knowing your body and your story belong to you. It’s an invitation to stop hiding. The female experience is a big huge secret. We are told to keep most everything to ourselves from birth. Telling secrets is fun. I wanted this movie to feel like a game of hot potato. Too hot to touch. I wanted a film that pulses with immediacy—quick cuts, immersive sound, a visceral rhythm that mirrors how memory really works—and to remind every person in the theater that your narrative is yours to rewrite.”

“What makes Chronology such a masterful debut is Stewart’s innate understanding of how to translate this idea-of the visceral, invisible ways that our bodies keep the score-to the screen.” Isaac Feldberg, RogerEbert.com

“On an almost subatomic level, Stewart communes with the liquid spirit of a woman who only became whole by allowing herself to dissolve into the smallest essences of her being.” David Ehrlich, IndieWire

“A movie that’s all about consciousness, one that shows you everything but never spells it out too obviously… as if every shot were a sentence ripped from a hidden diary. This is the beauty of what movies can do. They can be voyeuristic and honest, give us privileged glimpses of the forbidden, of what people are really like, of all the muck and pain and yearning we cover up.” Owen Gleiberman, Variety
