The War of the Roses

Screening times:
Saturday, August 30, 8:45 PM

Danny DeVito | USA | 1989 | 116m

This is not a love story. It is the story of Oliver and Barbara Rose (Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner), a corporate lawyer and his wife who raise two children in a gorgeous home in Washington DC. At a point where the kids are about to go to college, Barbara realizes the sacrifices she made for their life together weren't worth it, and she takes steps to secure her financial independence and rid herself of her husband. This while divorce lawyer Gavin D'Amato (Danny DeVito) does his best to mediate.

This film is one of the blackest, funniest satirical comedies in Hollywood history, with a frankly astonishing commitment to its vision. The War of the Roses is the last word on movies about marital strife. It's uncertain what the new version in cinemas starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman can do to update the original, but it won't be meaner.

Based on the 1981 novel by Warren Adler, the film reunites the stars of the 1980s adventure franchise Romancing The Stone, and its sequel, The Jewel of The Nile, for the final time and a very different kind of picture.

"It's to the credit of DeVito and his co-stars that they were willing to go that far, but maybe it shows more courage than wisdom." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"DeVito triumphs by instilling this caustic satire with truth and consequence."- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"Wildly funny and deeply disturbing, The War Of The Roses never hesitates to go for the jugular and succeeds more often than not in its valiant attempts to draw blood." - Robyn Karney, Empire Magazine
