Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu | New Zealand | 2024 | 82m
with Rima Te Wiata, Erana James, Nathalie Morris and Manaia Hall
In 1954 New Zealand, three rebellious girls — Nellie, Daisy, and Lou — are sent to a remote island institution, where they form an unbreakable bond in defiance of their strict matron. But as cruel punishments escalate, their friendship is tested, forcing them to choose between resistance and survival.
Programmers at the Toronto International Film Festival described We Were Dangerous by saying "it balances heavy themes of Indigenous displacement and institutionalized violence against women with lighthearted moments and endearing characters ... despite the gravity of their situation, sparking conflicts and betrayals, this film perfectly portrays girlhood at its finest: the indestructible strength of friendships that can be formed even amidst dire times."
"Seldom has a seeming feel-bad movie turned so feel-good as 'We Were Dangerous', and brilliantly so, by subverting the stereotypes that an anti-stereotype viewer may not even know they had." - Luke Y. Thompson, ill LYTeracy
"It’s a hopeful — sometimes borderline exuberant — rallying cry for girls to stick together across the various divides that people use to disempower them." - David Ehrlich, IndieWire
"One of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time. Director Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu smartly leans into the levity and joy of these girls and the absurdity of their oppressors." - Taylor Gates, Collider
