Ameer Fakher Eldin | Canada, Germany, Italy | 2026 | 124m

Haunted by a cryptic story his ailing mother repeats in her struggle with Alzheimer’s, an exiled Syrian writer, Munir (Georges Khabbaz), travels to a remote island off the coast of Germany. On the island, where nature is both threat and refuge, he encounters the enigmatic Valeska (Hanna Schygulla) and her conservative son Karl (Tom Wlaschiha). Few words are spoken between them yet small gestures of kindness slowly break through suspicion, until the island itself, with the overwhelming majesty of nature, conspires to transform Munir’s path in life.

Yunan is a cinematic poetry, deliberate and beautiful, unafraid of wading into the big themes of life, nature, and fate.

“As a mellow, slow-burning study of cross-cultural human connection, the film is quietly rewarding.” - Guy Lodge, Variety

“The somber drama has a cumulative spell, intensified by its hypnotic visual command and an atmospheric principal setting on Germany’s Hallig Islands.” - David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter

“Those hungry for new auteurs may be curious to catch Yunan, a film which confirms Eldin has a real knack for cinematic mood painting.” - Lee Marshall, Screen International
