Films of Resistance: 9 to 5

Screening times:
Saturday, May 16, 8:30 PM

Colin Higgins | USA | 1980 | 110m

9 to 5 tells the story of 3 put-upon office workers: Judy (Jane Fonda), Violet (Lily Tomlin) and Doralee (Dolly Parton). They work at Consolidated Companies, under the sexist, authoritarian thumb of “egotistical, lying, bigot”, Mr Hinkle. After a marijuana-filled night of revenge fantasies, they form a plot to get even in real life.

For a star-studded Hollywood comedy, 9 to 5 has some surprising roots in reality. The film is based on an idea by Fonda who was inspired by her friend Karen Nussbaum, co-founder of 9to5: The Organization of Women Office Workers. Nussbaum arranged for Fonda, screenwriter Patricia Reskin and director Colin Higgins to meet with forty women office workers to learn first-hand about the problems they faced on the job, plus the ways they dreamed of getting back their bosses. Many of these women’s stories of day to day humiliations (and fantasies of payback) show up in this screwball comedy informed by a sharp view of women’s real experiences .

"What an absolute delight of working class rage." - Sarah Reine - Egregious

"Dolly Parton on the screen simply seems to be having a great time, ready to sweep everyone else up in her enthusiasm, her concern, her energy." - Roger Ebert, RogerEbert.com
