Chandler Levack | Canada | 2025 | 112m
The second feature from Chandler Levack (I Love Movies) finds her mining her personal history once again for comic and heartfelt gold. Mile End Kicks is a funny and frank coming of age story about music instead of movies, but it’s just as fresh and as in love with its flawed but learning central character.
Grace (Barbie Ferreira) is the only female writer for a Toronto music magazine; listening to men tell her what she thinks while she tries to find her own voice. Fleeing to Montreal’s Mile End at the height of 2010s buzzing indie music scene, she struggles with roommates, sex, money and some dark truths about a past relationship. Flailing in self doubt, roommate trouble and her complex semi-relationships with two members of the same band (the accurately named Bone Patrol), her attempts to write a book about Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill become a way for her to tap into her own anger.
"Levack’s screenplay is sharp, deeply human, painful, but genuinely hilarious." - Ben Glidden Film Threat
"“Mile End Kicks” constructively taps into a specific kind of womanly anger, a kind of earned and silent rage all my fellow females will be familiar with." - Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert.com
“Chandler Levack’s Mile End Kicks expertly mines the missteps of Montreal’s wasted youth.” - Rahel Ho, The Globe and Mail"
