David Cronenberg | Canada | 1981 | 103m
Widely known as a principle originator of the body horror genre, Canadian director David Cronenberg has disturbed and delighted audiences with his uncanny knack for exploring (and exploiting) our most unsettling fears over a six-decade career. In June we screen some of his earliest works with our Saturday night series: Late Nights, Early Cronenberg!
A scientist trains a man with an advanced telepathic ability called "scanning" to stop a dangerous Scanner with extraordinary psychic powers from waging war against non scanners.
"An essential artifact for fans of Cronenber's work — especially for those interested in tracing how his style evolved from straight horror (Rabid, The Brood) into more philosophical and speculative realms." - Eli Brau, Cinephile Corner
"This relatively early work from Cronenberg shows all Cronenberg's signature stylistics in full bloom." - Marjorie Baumgarten, The Austin Chronicle
"Part conspiracy thriller, part political tract, it is Cronenberg's most coherent movie to date, drawing a dark (but bland) world in which corporate executives engineer human conception to produce ever more powerful mental samurai." - Derek Adams, Time Out (UK)
