Kohei Igarashi | Japan, France | 2024 | 94m
Japanese with English subtitles
with Hiroki Sano, Yoshinori Miyata
Childhood friends Sano and Miyata visit a resort hotel in Izu, searching for a lost red hat while revisiting places where Sano first met and fell in love with his late wife Nagi five years prior.
Igarashi's latest film doesn't directly engage with the pandemic, but it is haunted by it. The two time periods straddle those events, 2018 and 2023, and helps drive home the theme of how much can change in an individual's life, and collectively, in a few years.
This comedy-drama film premiered at the 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival in the Giornate degli Autori sidebar. It won the Grand Prix for Best Film at the 2024 Film Fest Gent and the Golden Puffin at the Reykjavík International Film Festival.
“Super Happy Forever” whimsically shows how memories are as much in our bodies as they are in our minds and how visiting certain places again acts as portals for a richer understanding than musing on things in our heads. It urges us not to be afraid of losing our experiences to time. Our memories are like the waves that crash against the coast: gone for a moment, but then here in the next." - Zachary Lee, RogerEbert.com
"A gentle Japanese charmer... Five years separate the two halves of “Super Happy Forever,” a delicate, unassuming but subtly complex love story in reverse that doesn’t dart between timelines, instead offering the past as a bittersweet chaser to the present." - Guy Lodge, Variety
