Two households, both alike in dignity… In Verona Beach, the Capulets and Montagues are two rival business empires. The animosity of the older generation erupts frequently into violence by their younger relatives. Montague Romeo (Leonardo Dicaprio) and Capulet Juliet (Claire Danes) meet at a party, and fall in love at first sight before they realize they should be bitter enemies. You know the rest!
Baz Luhrmann’s brash and luminous adaptation of Shakepeare’s play retains the dialogue but moves the action to the contemporary US and replaces the swords with guns. Featuring Harold Perrineau as the greatest Mercutio ever to grace the screen (we will challenge you to a duel on this), 30 years on Romeo + Juliet will still get you as giddy as a first kiss.
It’s our 16th birthday and we are feeling shiny so please join us to celebrate with our double feature of Romeo + Juliet (playing outside in Gus’s Garden next to the Natural History Museum, weather permitting) and Baz Luhrmann’s first feature, Strictly Ballroom (indoor screening) on July 30th.
