Sweet Sequined Sixteenth! Birthday Double Bill!

Screening times:
Thursday, July 30, 6:30 PM

Baz Luhrmann | Australia | 1992 | 94 mins

Carbon Arc Cinema turns 16 years old this July! Birthday celebrations include a Baz Luhrmann double bill (Strictly Ballroom will be followed by Romeo + Juliet). Free popcorn to anyone wearing sequins or sparkles!

Baz Luhrmann’s first feature is a campy underdog romance bursting with infectious energy and heart. And sparkles.

Scott, the frustrated son of a family of ballroom dancers, has been training since the age of six. His mother Shirley teaches dancing, and his father Doug meekly handles maintenance chores at their dance studio, while secretly watching old footage of his bygone dance competitions. Scott struggles to establish his personal style of dance, but his innovative and flashy steps are not considered “strictly ballroom”. After losing his dance partner due to his maverick ways, Ken is approached by Fran, an overlooked and clumsy beginner at the studio who is willing to dance his steps. Together they battle the odds for a chance at winning the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Dancing Championship.

It’s our 16th birthday and we are feeling shiny so please join us to celebrate with our double feature of Strictly Ballroom (indoor screening) and Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet (playing outside in Gus’s Garden next to the Natural History Museum, weather permitting) on July 30th.

"What's best about the movie is the sense of madness and mania running just beneath its surface... Scott's attempt to introduce anarchy – and new dance steps – into their tiny enclave is all the funnier because he, too, takes it so deadly seriously." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"The movie has wit, style, and a special brand of irreverence that allows it to work as a love story, a comedy of manners, and a satire... you'll leave the theater with a warm feeling deep inside." - James Berardinelli, ReelViews

"Snappily scripted, it has a brashness inherent in Aussie soaps and a charm all of its own, then-debutant director Luhrmann revealing a light, irreverent touch..." - Mark Salisbury, Empire Magazine
