For the last twelve years, Marisela and Ely, as part of the volunteer group The Águilas del Desierto, have roamed the US-Mexico desert. Their goal: to seek, find, and return to their families the bodies of migrants who died while crossing the border on foot. This all-consuming calling takes a crushing toll on them, but how could they stop? While they frequently come upon migrants attempting to make the crossing, any effort to help them, even if they’re injured, could result in charges of human trafficking. Spare My Bones, Coyote! is a documentary that follows this challenging, dangerous, and heartrending work, and peers into the difficult and dedicated lives these people have chosen.

“Informs about who Águilas del Desierto are and what their work entails, while also amplifying their message about how to act when left behind in the desert; the documentary ultimately adopts a broader humanistic perspective on migration.” - Martin Kudlac, ScreenAnarchy

“Ely Ortiz knows how [migrant families] feel because his brother and cousin died while trying to cross the desert in 2012, and spent months trying to find their bodies.” - Sarah Boslaugh, theartsstl

“Spare My Bones, Coyote does not moralize or sensationalize. Instead, it confronts viewers with the exhaustion, pain, and courage of those navigating an unforgiving landscape.” - Hudson Moura, hudsonmoura.net
