Céline Sciamma | France | 2011 | 84m
French with English subtitles
We are screening Sciamma on Saturday nights all through April! Films include: Tomboy, Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Petite Maman.
A family with two children, 10-year-old "Laure" (Zoé Héran) and 6-year-old Jeanne (Malonn Lévana), moves to a new suburban neighborhood during the summer holidays. With a short haircut and tomboy ways, "Laure" is immediately taken for a boy by the local kids, and decides to pass as “Mikael,” a boy different enough to catch the attention of leader of the pack Lisa (Jeanne Disson), who becomes smitten.
Céline Sciamma brings a light and charming touch to this contemporary coming-of-age story, which is also about relationships between children, children and parents, and the even more complicated one between one’s heart and body.
"Should make people sit up and pay attention, not only due to Sciamma's naturalistic script and instinctive directing, but also the remarkable ensemble of young talent that she has consolidated into one film." - Sophie Kingston-Smith, Cinevue
"Sciamma pictures the story in dappled sunlight and wooded fields that, though not far from dull apartment blocks, have an out-of-time seductiveness." - John DeFore, Washington Post
"Quiet and naturalistic in the best way, the French film "Tomboy" rolls out a tale of malleable pre-adolescent identity with a marked absence of sensationalism." - Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times
"Strikingly fresh and uncontrived, lively with wonderful performances." - Steve Cruz, OUT FRONT Magazine
